Collaborations

IBGE scientists work with leading research institutes, universities and laboratories in Pakistan and abroad. These partnerships bring new technologies to Pakistan, give our researchers international exposure and help us deliver better diagnosis and treatment to patients. The summary below is compiled from the work of our research groups and researchers.

International collaborations

  • National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA – Bone marrow failure syndromes (aplastic anaemia, Fanconi anaemia), with Dr Sharon Savage, since 2017.
IBGE: Dr. Sadia Rehman, Dr. Nusrat Saba
  • National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA – Genomic medicine and skeletal genetics, with Dr Carlos Ferreira.
    IBGE: Dr. Noor ul Ain
  • University of Sydney, Australia – Skeletal genetics and skeletal dysplasias, with Prof. Dr Andreas Zankl.
    IBGE: Dr. Noor ul Ain
  • DKMS Life Science Lab, Germany – High-resolution HLA typing for organ and bone-marrow transplantation, since 2022.
IBGE: Molecular Diagnostics group, Dr. Sadia Rehman
  • Sahlgrenska Academy, Sweden – Molecular genetics of psoriasis in Pakistani patients.
    IBGE: Dr. Saeeda Munir
  • ICGEB, Trieste, Italy – Human papillomavirus (HPV) research.
    IBGE: Dr. Abida Siddiqa
  • Lee Kong Medical College, Singapore – Genetics of stroke and stroke risk in the Pakistani population.
    IBGE: Genomics group

Prospective: Institute of Ophthalmology, University College London (UCL), UK – with Prof. Julie Daniel and Dr Sajjad Ahmad, on human amniotic membrane (HAM) derivatives for ophthalmic use (Regenerative Medicine group). Further collaborations on rare genetic diseases are in progress.

National collaborations & research funding

  • Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) – funded projects, including the genetics of haemochromatosis in the Pakistani population, and research travel grants.
  • Higher Education Commission (HEC) – National Research Program for Universities (NRPU) grant for cancer research, postdoctoral scholarships and travel grants.
  • Pakistan Academy of Sciences (PAS) – funded research project, 2021–2023.
  • Hospitals and clinicians across Pakistan – stem cell therapy and human amniotic membrane (HAM) allografts for burns, eye surgery, wounds and diabetic foot ulcers; HLA typing for organ transplantation centres.

National initiatives led by IBGE

  • Pakistan Human Genome Project (proposed) – mapping the genetic diversity of Pakistan’s population.
  • National Database of human rare diseases and a catalogue of genetic variations.
  • National Public Stem Cell Bank and a Bone Marrow Donor Registry (planned).
  • National cytogenetics-based biodosimetry facility for dose assessment after radiation exposure.
